The English Hackamore makes up part of a bitless bridle. The Hackamore bit works by putting pressure on the horse's nose and jaw when the reins are used. When the reins are relaxed, the Hackamore rests in a completely non-restrictive neutral position. The Hackamore also applies pressure over other points of the head, with poll pressure and chin strap pressure similar to the action of a curb piece.
It is normally used on horses that are sensitive in their mouths and struggle with any bit.
