The Shires Double Jointed Copper Lozenge Pelham is a relatively gentle Pelham as there is no nutcracker action from the mouth piece and minimal tongue pressure due to the joint. The lozenge Pelham is great for horses that need a stronger bit, it lies flat on the tongue rather than creating pressure points. The copper link assists with acceptance of the bit, softness and salivation.
The Pelham is an incorporation of the Weymouth and Bradoon, and therefore designed to be used with two reins. The first rein is attached to the larger snaffle ring, and the second rein is attached to the ring at the bottom of the shank. When the first rein is used the Pelham acts like a hanging cheek snaffle, putting slight pressure on the poll and various pressures in the mouth depending on the mouthpiece. When the second rein is brought into play, this increases the leverage and lip pressure, and also the curb chain comes into play.
This bit can be used with double reins or with Pelham Roundings for novice riders.
Mouthpiece thickness: 16mm. Cheek height: 125mm (4.5"), 130mm (5"), 140mm (5.5").
