The JHL Rugby Jointed Pelham is a traditional leverage show bit specifically designed to create the optical illusion of a full double bridle while using only one single mouthpiece. It is highly favoured in the showing ring for strong horses that have small or fleshy mouths and cannot comfortably accommodate the physical bulk of two independent metal bits (a separate Weymouth and Bradoon). Unlike standard Pelhams, its unique floating link ring system offers a more dynamic, head-raising response for horses that tend to carry themselves too low.

- Mouthpiece Design and Material: Traditional single-jointed mouthpiece in premium Pro-Steel stainless steel (durable, rust-resistant, and tasteless).
- Mouthpiece Thickness: Typically 19mm (providing a thick, classic supportive surface area across the bars).
- Cheekpiece Style: Rugby Pelham shanks featuring an independent, floating loose ring linked to the top snaffle ring.
How it Works:
- The Rugby Cheek Illusion: The bridle’s slip head (or independent bradoon hanger) buckles directly onto the small floating top loop, while the primary rein connects to the large floating ring. This allows the snaffle element to slide freely, mimicking the fluid look and loose-ring feel of a standard double bridle.
- Head-Raising Nutcracker Action: The single-jointed mouthpiece breaks in a classic V-shape when tension is applied, shifting pressure onto the lower bars of the mouth and squeezing upward against the outer edges of the tongue and palate. This upward action is highly effective for lifting the front end of horses that lean heavily or get "heavy on the forehand".
- Dual Rein Mechanical Leverage:
  - The Snaffle Rein: Attached to the floating ring, it maintains constant, direct contact for everyday steering and keeping the horse up in the bridle.
  - Connected The Curb Rein: Connected to the bottom ring, it acts as a lever. When engaged, it pulls the upper shanks forward to apply downward poll pressure while simultaneously drawing the double-link curb chain snug against the chin groove for increased braking control.
This bit is not legal for British Dressage (BD) or FEI competitions but is widely permissible in Showjumping and Cross Country phases.
