The JHL 3-Ring Dutch Gag (also known as Continental Jointed Gag) is a strong leverage bit designed for horses that pull, lean or run on their forehand. It provides customisable control by combining a traditional snaffle action with adjustable poll pressure.

- High-quality, durable stainless steel.
- Mouthpiece Thickness: Formulated with a very thick 21mm profile to provide a wide, forgiving dispersion area across the tongue and bars.
- Cheek Height/ Shank Length: Proportions scale by size to fit the head shape naturally (160mm for size 4.5")
How it Works:
- Variable Leverage Options: The unique 3-ring layout features four total hoops but three specific attachment loops for your reins. The top loop secures the bridle cheekpieces. Bitting your reins onto the main snaffle loop functions similarly to a basic loose ring, while moving the reins down to the middle or lower loops increases leverage to apply distinct downward poll pressure.
- Corrects Head Carriage: The poll pressure applied by the lower rings physically encourages horses that stick their noses up or fight the hands to lower their head, soften at the poll, and rebalance their centre of gravity.
- Nutcracker Action: Built with a single-jointed centre link, drawing the reins tightly causes the mouthpiece to collapse into an upward "V" shape. This concentrates pressure directly over the edges of the tongue, lips, and bars of the mouth to break a horse's forward grip.
- Proportional Engineering: The 4.5" is constructed with smaller, lightweight outer rings. This design shift prevents the metalwork from overwhelming a pony's face or dropping unnecessarily low.
This bit is strictly illegal for Dressage under British Dressage (BD) and FEI rulebooks due to the leverage action created by the multi-ring shank design. It is highly legal and favoured for showjumping, cross-country, and hacking strong horses.
Usage Tips:
- Rein Configuration: Because leverage is applied whenever you handle the lower loops, it is highly recommended to ride with two reins (one on the snaffle ring for clean contact, one lower down for braking power) or with Pelham roundings paired into a single rein. This prevents you from constantly pulling down on the horse's poll when it isn't necessary
