From 1st November 2017 we shall have available a new riding hat, the Gatehouse Air Rider, for use by riding school clients who do not have a current standard hat of their own. There will be a hire fee of £2.50 per hat per lesson charged for the use of these hats, payable to the shop staff through the till before the start of each lesson. You are advised to allow sufficient time for this transaction.

If you would rather wear one of these new hats rather than one of our older stock earlier than 1st November then you may do so from Saturday 7th October on payment of the £2.50 hire fee as above. From 1st November the hire hats will be the only ones available.

Please note that any helmet worn during any activity at Park Farm must conform to British safety standards and meet at least PAS 015 (1998 or 2011). There may be other countries’ marks inside your hat, depending in which country it was manufactured/sold, but PAS 015 must accompany any other standards to show that it has been examined by British Standards and therefore is acceptable under our insurance policy.

It is not recommended to buy 2nd hand hats/helmets or hats from the internet as the construction of the hat enables it to absorb blows from being dropped or from heavy falls, which may not be apparent from the outside. We strongly recommend that you buy from a retailer with staff trained to fit hats and with a large enough selection of brands/types to suit your requirements and budget.

As a guide, a new hat/helmet will cost from about £55, depending on which make/size/style is preferred. Skull (jockey) helmets are easy to make more like traditional velvet riding hats with the addition of a black or navy blue velvet show cover, while most children enjoy choosing from a wide variety of colours and patterns available on hat silks for their everyday riding activities.

A traditional velvet riding hat or other hard hat with a peak may be worn for all normal lessons and for showing, dressage and show jumping competitions. A jockey-style helmet (with or without a cover) must be worn for cross country lessons and competitions.

If you have any queries about helmets or any other aspect of your child’s riding at Park Farm please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff in the shop, call us on 01256 780375 or email
